The CEO and co-founder of Hipmunk, Adam Goldstein, says that the best time to book summer travel is in the last week of April, about 6 weeks before Memorial Day. But if you’re like most people who intend to travel this summer, you either haven’t made any travel plans yet or haven’t finalized them. Only about 1/3 of summer travelers have their plans set.
A record 49 million Americans will be traveling this 4th of July. The vast majority of those trips–almost 40 million–will be by car. The National Association of Convenience Stores reports that 85% of us still intend to spend some time behind the wheel. And what’s a road trip without a stop for salty snacks, the choice of 41% of respondents, or a healthy dose of “are we there yet?”, the leading cause of disagreements on the road (45%). On the downside (or maybe upside), in 2017 gas prices were hovering at an all-time low in the weeks before Independence Day. According to AAA, drivers will spend $250 more on gas this summer as prices climb above $3.00 in most states. That won’t keep us from hitting the road, says the venerable automobile association. At that price, only 33% of travelers will be put off at the pump. Click here for AAA gas cost calculator.
